Assessment re-design in the context of AI: Flexible, authentic and meaningful assessment

Teachers face huge challenges in assuring learning outcomes and designing assessment in the age of AI where learners may overrely on AI. The presenters give examples of good practice and three core principles of assessment redesign: flexibility, authenticity and meaningfulness — all aimed towards aligning student assessment with sense of self and motivating them to engage productively and ethically with assessment work. Oral assessment, particularly interactive and developmental assessment, is given as a best practice. From the example of oral assessment in their course CAES2004, about podcasting, students report high motivation and investment in the course material, as well as the opportunity for self-expression.
