Use Case

AI-mediated academic practice: Implications for academic integrity policies

At times, students may be uncertain about whether their use of AI constitutes misuse or plagiarism. To help teachers provide clarity on student human-AI collaboration, CAES has detailed their AI policy direction with a new set of rubrics that encourage “Optimal AI use” for students. Rather than suggesting that students use AI products one level above their capabilities mainly for ‘facilitative use’, students are encouraged to engage in ‘reliant use’ in addition to ‘transactional use’ of AI technology. CAES proposes this rubric to assess the degree of AI misuse by students, where reliant and transactional use entails partial or minimal task engagement. Additionally, they recommend essential AI policy items, such as providing ideal use cases and setting expectations for AI attribution, to foster a culture of transparency and trust between students and teachers while using AI to its fullest potential.
