Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Series: From Teaching Questions to Publication

Event Details

Date : 22 Oct (Thu), 11 Nov (Wed) & 10 Dec (Thu) 2026

Time : Varies

Venue : Varies

Abstract

The series moves from starting a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) study, to building a research journey in AI and education, to discussing how educational research is developed and published.

Date : 22 October 2026 (Thu)

Time : 12:45pm – 1:45pm

Venue : Learning Lab (RRS 321, 3/F, Run Run Shaw Building, Main Campus, HKU)

Speaker : Prof. Cecilia Chan, Professor, TALIC, HKU

Abstract

Many educators notice something in their teaching that they would like to understand better: why an activity works for some students but not others, whether an assessment supports the learning they intended, or how students experience a new approach. How can such questions become a manageable research study? This introductory seminar offers a practical route into the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Professor Cecilia Chan will discuss how to frame a focused question, draw on existing literature, choose appropriate evidence and methods, and consider ethics and feasibility. Participants will see how a study rooted in their own teaching can produce useful insights for students and colleagues and potentially form the basis of a publication. No prior SoTL research experience is needed.

Date : 11 Nov 2026 (Wed)

Time : 5:00pm

Online : Zoom

Speaker : Prof. Cecilia Chan, Professor, TALIC, HKU

Hosted by the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education. The International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education is ranked first in the Education & Educational Research category by Journal Impact Factor, with a 2025 impact factor of 38.7.

Abstract

How can researchers build meaningful and impactful scholarship in an era where AI technologies are evolving faster than educational research can keep pace? In this webinar, Professor Cecilia Chan reflects on her research journey in AI and education and shares insights from her latest work on AI literacy, AI-resilient assessment, AI-giarism, ethical boundaries of AI use, and learners’ conceptualisations of AI as a cognitive partner. Drawing on recent empirical studies, the session explores emerging questions and future directions for educational technology research, considering how generative AI is reshaping our understanding of learning, assessment, and human thinking in education.

Date : 10 Dec 2026 (Thu)

Time : TBC

Venue : Learning Lab (RRS 321, 3/F, Run Run Shaw Building, Main Campus, HKU)

Facilitator : Prof. Cecilia Chan, Professor, TALIC, HKU

Abstract

What do journal editors look for when considering a paper for their journal? Professor Cecilia Chan will facilitate a conversation with journal editors about what makes a study valuable to readers, how editors decide whether to send a paper for review, and what authors can do to present their work clearly. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about publishing their teaching and learning research. The editors will be announced nearer the date.
