Application for the Teaching Excellence Awards involve a two-step process:

Submitting required materials through the online application system

Step 2

Endorsement by corresponding Faculty Deans/Unit Heads
Teaching staff/teams wishing to be considered for an award are expected to submit their applications online (https://teas.hku.hk/) for endorsement by their Faculty Deans, or Unit Heads, in the case of non-Faculty members. Team-based applications across Faculties will require the endorsement of the Faculty Dean of the team leader.

Applicants for UDTA, OTA and ECTA are required to submit the following materials online for assessment by the Selection Panel:

  • Statement of teaching philosophy with reference made to the three selection criteria (in no more than five A4 pages and no more than 2 000 words)
  • Evidence-based materials showing the impact of excellent teaching on students’ learning outcomes and the manner in which the applicant’s/team’s work may be generalised and applied to other disciplines (in no more than two A4 pages and no more than 800 words)
  • Evidence-based materials showing the engagement in professional development activities and commitment in continuous professional development (in no more than two A4 pages and no more than 800 words)
  • (For team applications only) Materials on demonstration of impact of the collaborative work on the development of effective teaching practice, and the role and percentage contribution of each of the team members (in no more than two A4 pages and no more than 800 words)
  • A short video (of no more than five minutes) highlighting how the selection criteria are met. This may include, for example, brief excerpts from teaching sessions, and audio-visual evidence of teaching practice and impact that best showcase he applicant’s strengths

Applicants for TIA are required to submit the following materials for assessment by the Selection Panel:

  • Description of a recent teaching innovation and the underpinning teaching philosophy with reference made to the three selection criteria (in no more than five A4 pages and no more than 2 000 words)
  • Evidence-based materials showing the impact of excellent teaching on students’ learning outcomes and the manner in which the applicant’s work may be generalised and applied to other disciplines (in no more than two A4 pages and no more than 800 words)
  • Evidence-based materials showing the engagement in professional development activities and commitment in continuous professional development (in no more than two A4 pages and no more than 800 words)
  • (For team applications only) Materials on demonstration of impact of the collaborative work on the development of effective teaching practice, and the role and percentage contribution of each of the team members (in no more than two A4 pages and no more than 800 words)

In addition to the evidence provided by the applicant as set out above to address the selection criteria, the Selection Panel will also seek from TALIC the course and teaching effectiveness scores of those courses taught by the applicants in the past 5 years.
