Introduction
From 2027-2028 Academic Year onwards, faculties and/or departments will be responsible for designing and delivering a pedagogical training course that enables RPg students to teach in their faculty/department.
TALIC will vet the proposed courses according to the guidelines provided below. Vetting criteria (endorsed by Prof Jay Siegel, VP PVC T&L), a template and checklist, and other materials are provided to support staff in their course design. Sample Materials will be added by the beginning of August.
Submission and Feedback Schedule
Staff who have been tasked with designing a pedagogical course should review the Vetting Criteria, and complete the Submission Documents. When ready, the documents should be sent to Graduate School (gradsch@hku.hk) and TALIC (talic@hku.hk). The subject line should read “Pedagogical Course Proposal for [name of Faculty/Department/School]”. Course proposal documents should be submitted by January 8, 2027 (early submissions are welcome).

Course Enrollment
All PhD students who begin their studies in or after 2027-2028 academic year must complete the faculty/department course as part of their course requirements. MPhil students must take the course if they engage in teaching duties (e.g., lectures, tutorials, lab demonstrations, PBL, grading, development of materials).
Exemptions for the course should be considered only in rare circumstances, where the RPg student has already taught extensively within an Outcomes-Based Approach to Student Learning (OBASL) framework. Exemption must be approved by TALIC. The evaluation process will include a review of relevant materials, which if deemed sufficient, will be followed by a live demonstration of teaching.
