    Abstract

HKU Libraries is redesigning multi-faceted literacies education through a Learning Experience Design (LxD) lens to address the rapid rise of Generative AI (GenAI) and its impact on student learning. Moving beyond traditional information literacy toward a comprehensive digital and AI literacy framework, the Libraries are reframing the librarian’s role from information provider to facilitator of knowledge-building and critical inquiry. Anchored in HKU’s GenAI policy and principles of responsible AI use, this initiative integrates GenAI both as a subject of instruction and as a tool embedded in learning design and library operations. By cultivating an internal culture of experimentation and ethical practice, HKU Libraries leverages GenAI to enhance staff productivity, streamline workflows, and free capacity for deeper student engagement and support. Guided by Learning Experience Design principles, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Mayer’s multimedia learning, the team has developed accessible, engaging, and practice-based learning experiences that foster critical thinking, ethical awareness, and practical AI skills. These include multimodal learning assets and scaffolded activities that help students become confident, responsible, and lifelong learners in an AI-enabled academic environment.

The presentation will share concrete cases from HKU Libraries’ transformation, including:
    • The internal GenAI Community of Practice that builds staff capability and shared standards for responsible AI integration.
    • The Productivity Series introduces staff and students to vetted digital tools, with some AI-empowered, and workflows that demonstrably improve efficiency and quality.
    • Multimedia content creation and redesign using digital and GenAI-enhanced tools, aligned with UDL to increase accessibility and learner choice.

AI-informed learning design processes where GenAI assists in prototyping, content generation, and personalization, while maintaining human oversight and academic integrity. Participants will learn how HKU Libraries aligns policy and practice to create coherent AI literacy pathways, and how LxD methods translate into scalable, inclusive programming. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies and design considerations for building or refining AI literacy initiatives in their own contexts, including tool selection, instructional design, and digital action plans. Through this integrated, design-forward approach, HKU Libraries demonstrates how academic libraries can lead in cultivating responsible, future-ready AI literacy across the university.
