TALIC has been tasked with vetting the proposals for faculty/department-level pedagogical training courses set to begin AY 2027-2028. The following vetting criteria are endorsed by Professor Jay Siegel (VP and PVC, Teaching and Learning). The course proposal should be consistent with
- About 36 contact hours, and contain
- Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) that are in line with conducting teaching in theirfaculty/department,
- Assessments that are aligned with, mapped to, and span the CLOs (i.e., all CLOs must be assessed),
- Teaching and Learning Activities that will support students in achieving the learning outcomes, including a syllabus and course schedule,
- Rubrics for each assessment, containing the criteria and standards against which students will be assessed,
- Descriptions of feedback practices that support learning and teaching skills improvement towards demonstrating the learning outcomes,
- Clear completion criteria, with remedial steps that will be taken to support and re-assess students who do not meet the criteria,
- Mentorship practices for students who perform any teaching duties. These practices must be provided across their teaching experiences. Mentors must be at the Lecturer grade or above, and have taught at HKU for at least two years, and
- Clear student-facing documentation about the course [student handbook].
- We strongly recommend that you include the following topics:
- Outcomes-Based Approach to Student Learning (Intended Learning Outcomes and Alignment to Assessments and Teaching & Learning Activities)
- Lesson Planning
- Student Engagement and Motivation
- Assessment (Formative and Summative) and Feedback
- Reflection and Improving Teaching

Course proposals should contain a completed Template and the items contained in the Checklist.
All PhD students who begin their studies AY 2027-2028 or onwards must complete the course as part of their coursework requirements – regardless of whether they have teaching duties or not. MPhil students who perform teaching duties must complete this course.
