  • Abstract

    There are challenges to encourage university students to engage continuously nowadays. Taking after-class reading activities as an example, such low levels of student engagement are also prevalent in many universities with a top world ranking. Facing such a difficulty, many university teachers reluctantly cut the amount of assigned reading or removed classics from their reading lists. This reflects a pressing need to find ways to increase students’ engagement, or a profound negative impact on the quality of higher education. Integrating emergent technologies, such as some artificial intelligence tools,  and research-based pedagogies, we implemented a seamless ongoing formative assessment learning approach to improve students’ engagement and learning outcomes in various postgraduate courses in Faculty of Education, and the impacts were encouraging. In this seminar, we will discuss:

    1. the related theoretical rationale;
    2. various examples of the learning designs, which fostered students to be engaged in both in-class and out-of-class learning, especially through the ongoing formative assessment activities empowered by emergent technologies;
    3. the feedback or/and effectiveness. The seminar will also discuss how we try to strike a balance between the teachers’ workload and learning effectiveness.
