Developing Critical Thinking: ChatGPT’s Answer as Question Material and Bad Assignment Example

In an introductory Musics of the World class, students critically analyzed a ChatGPT short essay response that draws comparisons of Western music with Javanese Gamelan, an Indonesian traditional ensemble, in terms of structure and features. In the lesson, students have the opportunity to assess and point out the issues with the AI chatbot’s response based on its content and factual correctness, i.e. the musical structures, forms and techniques, as well as the language usage and appropriateness.
