Abstract

Reading remains a cornerstone of university education, yet many Common Core instructors report that student reading engagement is declining. To better understand the scope of this challenge and identify what works, we surveyed over 40 Common Core colleagues about their reading practices, communication strategies, accountability mechanisms, and perceived levels of student engagement. This one-hour workshop will open with a presentation of the key survey findings, including the challenges most commonly reported by colleagues and the practices that appear to make a difference. We will then hear from two colleagues with intensive reading experience in their classrooms: Ms. Nicole Tavares, who will share her use of Perusall as a social annotation tool to foster active reading before class, and Dr. David Villena, who will discuss the iterative adjustments he has made to his reading requirements and how these changes have shaped student engagement. The goal of this session is not to prescribe a single solution, but to learn from each other and leave with actionable ideas suited to each colleague’s context.

About the Speakers

Dr. Christelle Not is an Environmental Science scholar, coordinator of the environmental science major and the Convenor for the Science and Technology Area of Inquiry in the Common Core at the University of Hong Kong. Alongside coordinating curriculum across the area, she is committed to improving teaching effectiveness through peer learning and evidence-based practice. She regularly facilitates opportunities for colleagues to share strategies, learn from one another, and develop more engaging approaches to teaching in the Common Core.
Ms. Nicole Tavares is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at HKU and has won multiple teaching awards. She teaches on several programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and is the MA(TESOL) Programme Director. Her main research interests lie in technology-enhanced good ELT and CLIL practices, COIL in higher education, web-based social annotation tools/styles, and feedback/mistake management. She enjoys experimenting with new teaching pedagogies and is eager to share her discoveries. Since 2021, she has been using Perusall, exploring different approaches to maximising its functionalities, and sharing her innovative practices at the annual Perusall Exchange and many other events. She is keen on devising strategies that motivate students to read and actively engage with their peers about texts, promoting a stronger sense of a learning community, which in turn facilitates peer learning and advances their critical thinking skills. Her recent research into students’ annotation styles has given her insights into approaches to promoting greater learner autonomy and ownership in the reading process.
Dr. David Villena is a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and the MA program in Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Society. He is also a Research Affiliate at the HKU AI & Humanities Lab. In 2025, he received the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. His research focuses on the philosophy and ethics of artificial intelligence, with particular attention to how intelligent systems influence human judgment, perception, and behavior in digital environments. Additionally, his work intersects the philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and applied ethics.
