Teaching Excellence Awards Virtual Workshop (2): Showcasing Excellence and Innovation

Overview
Teaching Excellence Awards Virtual Workshops (1) and (2) will be offered on 17 June 2021 and 24 June 2021, respectively. Both workshops will include an overview of the teaching excellence award scheme. The first workshop will emphasise the construction of an evidence-based portfolio and the second one will focus more on showcasing teaching innovations. Colleagues interested in the scheme are welcome to join both workshops.

Abstract
This workshop is open to all teaching staff who are interested in finding out more about the different Teaching Excellence Awards. Staff will be provided with an overview of the award schemes, the key selection criteria, and some suggestions on preparing an evidence-based teaching portfolio. Two award winners will share with us their experience of applying for the award. Staff who are thinking about making an application in the next round are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop. Staff who are not sure, or would simply like to know more about the scheme, are also very welcome.

About the speakers

Dr. Matthias Buehlmaier
HKU School of Business (Outstanding Teaching Award, 2020 and Teaching Innovation Award, 2020)

Matthias Buehlmaier is a principal lecturer in finance and the BBA(IBGM) program director at HKU Business School, University of Hong Kong (HKU). He has been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge via the Doris Zimmern HKU-Cambridge Hughes Hall Fellowship. Moreover, he has been a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Finance, Regensburg University. Since April 2020, he is an Advance HE Fellow. His research has appeared in the Review of Financial Studies (Oxford University Press), the Review of Finance, and is featured in the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation.

He is a winner of several teaching and research awards, e.g. the Outstanding Teaching Award and the Teaching Innovation Award granted by HKU, three Faculty Outstanding Teaching Awards, the inaugural Faculty Teaching Innovation Award, the Hong Kong Asian Capital Markets Research Price from the HKSFA, and the Stephan Koren Prize, to name a few. His interests include finance and applications of data science and AI. The first university course worldwide on the topic of text analytics in finance and fintech was developed and taught by him in 2018, with new iterations of the course taught every subsequent year.

Dr. John T.C. Fung
School of Nursing, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine (Teaching Innovation Award – Team awards, 2020)

Dr John Tai-Chun Fung, RN, DN, is a Lecturer at the School of Nursing of the University of Hong Kong. He received his DN at the University of Hong Kong. During his DN study, he has been actively engaging in curriculum development and conduction of randomized controlled trials (2012–2016). He joined the University of Hong Kong as a Clinical Instructor in 2011 and was promoted to Lecturer in 2018. In 2017, he developed the Global Health Leadership Workshop for nurse under Southeast and East Asian Nursing Education and Research Network (SEANERN). In 2021, he has received the Teaching Innovation Award under the teaching excellence scheme by the University of Hong Kong. He is also nominated by the University of Hong Kong for UGC teaching award in 2021. His principal research area lies in simulation-based education and curriculum development. He primarily focuses on determining the impact of clinical competence in simulation on undergraduate nursing students. He is particularly interested in the research of virtual simulation and debriefing. Some of his work focuses on developing the pedagogy of simulation-based education integrated longitudinally in the curriculum, determination of VTL learning engagement, autonomous motivation in students’ inter-professional education and the impact of cultural competence in student exchange. He is also the first accredited simulation educator in Hong Kong within the Association for simulation practice in healthcare. Currently, he is working on a large-scale interventional study involving the adoption of hybrid immersive simulation experience among the final year cohort nursing students incorporating virtual simulation and virtual reality. He is also involved in multiple UGC grants and projects. He provided innovative training workshops at HKUSON to educate colleagues in the use of debriefing and virtual simulation.

Dr. Janet Y.H. Wong
School of Nursing, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine (Teaching Innovation Award – Team awards, 2020)

Dr Janet Yuen-Ha Wong, RN, PhD, FHKCHSE, FCHSM, is an Associate Professor at the School of Nursing of the University of Hong Kong. She received her PhD at the University of Hong Kong. During her PhD study, she had been awarded Fulbright visiting scholarship (2010–2011) affiliated with University of Virginia in the United States.

Her principal research area lies in different contributors to health inequalities and vulnerabilities, including intimate partner violence, poverty, ethnic minority and sexual minority. She is also interested in education research and scholarship. She is currently the Chair of Teaching & Learning and provides leadership for 3 undergraduate and 2 post-registration programs in the School. Apart from curriculum development in the programs, she has been working with the teaching team to use technology in nursing education including virtual reality based education in enhancing students’ empathy for psychiatric patients, using a robot to train up health assessment and questioning skills during patient admission and using high fidelity simulation for enhancing students’ clinical competency, situation awareness and problem solving skills with the funding supported from seven UGC Teaching Development Grants. In 2021, she, together with her colleagues, has received the Teaching Innovation Award (Team) under the teaching excellence scheme by the University of Hong Kong.
