Workshop 1: Resources for Preparing Students in Experiential Learning

Abstract
This is to mark the launch of the video resources on experiential learning that are recently created for students. In this event, you will hear many teachers sharing their expertise in supporting students for experiential learning as well as students’ view on what had been challenging and what best supported their experiential learning. Please join us to celebrate and mark this event.

About the Speakers
Dr Lily Min Zeng is a senior lecturer at the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL), The University of Hong Kong. She has nearly 20 years’ teaching experience in higher education and has worked in the field of educational development since 2008. Her current role includes teaching on the core professional development programmes, providing consultation for academic staff, conducting teaching development projects and research, developing learning packages for teachers and students, and supporting various teaching initiatives of the university. She have been invited to give talks on teaching and learning to universities in Hong Kong, Australia, Macau and Mainland China on a wide range of topics. A MOOC she developed on university teaching is very well received and has been used for professional development in many universities internationally.

Dr Gary Harfitt is an Associate Professor and currently the Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching at the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. He has worked in Hong Kong since 1989 first as an English language teacher and Department Head in a local secondary school and since 2002 as a teacher educator at the Faculty of Education. The recipient of several individual and team teaching awards, Gary has worked with pre- and in-service teachers on multiple preparatory programmes and has overseen the introduction of Experiential Learning (EL) into teacher training programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Faculty.

Dr Lefler has broad experience in corporate and transactional legal matters both in the United States and across Asia. His experience includes capital markets, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and general company matters. He has spent most of his private legal career helping to build bridges between business counter-parties from within and outside of Asia. In addition to a robust private legal experience, Mr. Lefler has focused on activities and programs with a direct social benefit to the community. Along with legal pro bono assistance, Mr. Lefler has also spent significant time volunteering in other social endeavors around Asia and in South America, focusing on education and medical care. Mr. Lefler’s teaching style is based on imparting practical knowledge that students will find useful in real-world settings. He brings his broad, cross-cultural experience to bear in helping students learn to dissect and analyze legal and business problems and come up with creative solutions.

Mr Patrick Desloge is Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Applied English Studies at HKU where he has been working in the area of education technology for nearly two decades. In recent years he has taken on two large projects: As the Director of the Nurturing Global Leaders (NGL) programme, a programme funded by grant from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, he oversees more than a hundred HKU and local youth who engage with marginalized youth in Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia (and Mainland China in 2018) by working as volunteer interns teaching English as a Second Language. This project intersects with his second area of interest, digital literacies, where he is investigating the potential of digital media as a mechanism to assess experiential learning.

Ms Elsa Lam is Lecturer in experiential learning, Faculty of Social Sciences, HKU. She is currently taking care of project-based overseas experiential learning projects, where reflection and ethical engagement is one of the key elements. Together with students, she developed several case study on ethical engagement based on student reflection. She began her career as a journalist in Hong Kong and later devoted herself for more than a decade to disaster relief and rehabilitation and rural community development in China and Vietnam.

About the Speakers
Dr. N.S. Wong obtained both the degree of Bachelor of Science and Master of Philosophy from the University of Hong Kong. He obtained the Ph.D. degree from the University of Birmingham in UK. Dr. N.S.Wong’s area of research interest has always been in the field of cellular signal transduction mechanisms in health and diseases. Dr. N.S.Wong has long years of experience in teaching biochemistry, particularly in the subject of metabolism to undergraduates of both professional and non-professional health science programs. He is especially interested in exploring how basic sciences in general, and metabolism in particular should be taught to students of professional health programs to better serve the public. He is also interested in exploring innovative ways by which the principle of student-centered learning could best be implemented, with the ultimate aim of nurturing undergraduates to become free and creative thinkers.

Gray Kochhar-Lindgren
With a PhD from Emory University in Interdisciplinary Studies, Gray Kochhar-Lindgren has taught in the United States, Switzerland, Germany, and Hong Kong. Currently, he is serving as Professor and Director of the Common Core at the University of Hong Kong, and, prior to this position he served as Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, the inaugural Director of the Discovery Core, and Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Learning at the University of Washington-Bothell. He was awarded the 2019 HKU Team-Teaching Innovation Award for Transdisciplinarity-in-Action (with Gina Marchetti, Mathew Pryor, and Julian Tanner).

About the Speaker
Dr Abraham Wai
Dr Abraham Wai is developing the Public Health Leadership Programme, a year-long service-learning experience in Enrichment Year of MBBS programme, in which students acquire 21st century skills and research skills through community consultancy service in rural China. Abraham will share his experience in the development of a service-learning programme with the ambition to develop whole-person growth and research skills.

About the Speaker
Dr. Cecilia Chan is the Assistant Director (Innovation and Support) and Associate Professor in the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at the University of Hong Kong. She has conducted research on topics such as the development and assessment of generic competencies, assessment, feedback and engineering, science and business education. Cecilia holds a PhD in Engineering from Trinity College, a postgraduate diploma and a MA in Higher Education. She also held a Fellowship from King’s College London. Dr. Chan has involved in over 40 research projects worldwide and was awarded the HKU Outstanding Researcher Award in 2014. She is the Chair for the Engineering Education Community in Hong Kong and will be the Founding President for the ASIA Society Engineering Education (ASIASee). Dr. Chan is a seasonal keynote and invited speakers for many conferences internationally, she has also chaired a number of international conferences.
