Abstract
This seminar will discuss changes made to the Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (CTLHE) subsequent to a short visit to the UCL ARENA Centre in the summer of 2018. The ARENA Centre shapes UCL’s teaching and learning. Drawing on her experience attending a variety of ARENA workshops/seminars and her discussions with staff, the speaker will share experience and insights gained from the Fellowship that served to enable renewing of the CTLHE course contents, activities and assessment. As a result of such renewal, the CTLHE course aligns closer with the UK Professional Standards Framework. Completing the CTLHE course has now become an initial step towards professionalism in higher education for RPgs at HKU: RPgs are eligible to apply for the Associate Fellowship, Advance HE (AFHEA) provided that they have 25 hours of teaching in higher education. Exchange of ideas and practices during and after the visit has also been beneficial for the speaker to serve as mentor for both AFHEA and FHEA applicants. In this seminar, two RPgs who took CTLHE in 2019 and attained fellowships (one got AFHEA and the other got FHEA) will share experience earned from both the renewed CTLHE course and the mentoring process.
About the Speaker
Dr. Ada Lee joined the Centre for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL), HKU in 2014. From 2014 onwards, she has been the Programme Leader of the Certificate of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education course (CTLHE): a course with an annual intake of over 500 full-time research postgraduate students (RPgs) who are going to undertake teaching and/or assessment duties at HKU. She has experience serving as mentor and assessor for both AFHEA and FHEA applications. She also designed and facilitated teaching skills workshops for honorary clinical tutors of HKU Faculty of Dentistry. Prior to joining CETL in 2014, Ada was Teaching Consultant of the Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit, LKS Faculty of Medicine, HKU. She was involved in the teaching of medical ethics, curriculum development and facilitation of various workshops (including narrative workshops and mindfulness workshops) in medical humanities. In 2018, she was conferred a MA degree in Buddhist Studies, Kelaniya University, Sri Lanka.
