Abstract:
This project aims to investigate how generic skills should be assessed in the engineering discipline in HK higher education in the context of in-class and out-of-class activities which are related to the discipline, based on the perception of employers, students and teachers. The stakeholders’ attitude towards the assessment of generic skills will be examined in terms of a) its validity and reliability; b) whether it should be explicit or implicit; formative or summative; qualitative or quantitative; embedded, integrated or bolt-on; and c) whether it will produce negative or positive sentiment. The project also aims to investigate how generic skills competency should be reported to provide evidence of student learning in the engineering discipline in HK higher education based on the perception of the stakeholders. Findings from this project will help to guide the development of an optimum assessment and reporting process for generic skills competency, informing national/institutional/faculty policies, guidelines, criteria and quality assurance in HK engineering higher education.
